Jael the rule breaker

Now Jael’s story is rather unorthodox and I was a little bit worried about adding her to the list of amazing women, however the bible deemed her praise worthy, so there is something to be learnt from her.

Where you’ll find her

Judges 4 (vs 16-22) &5 (vs 24-27)

Who she was

Jael was a wife and described as a tent-dwelling woman, which I assume would be the equivalent of today’s ‘house wife.’

What she did

Sisera’s army had been defeated by Deborah and Barak, but Sisera himself managed to escape on foot. He ended up fleeing into Jael’s tent thinking he was safe there because her husband had an alliance with Sisera’s King. Jael used her femininity, which is viewed as a weakness alot of the time, as a strength but Sisera underestimated her because of it. She ‘hid’ him, gave him something to drink, allowed him to feel comfortable and even fall asleep. She then drove a peg through his temple and he died. And just as the Lord said, Sisera was delivered into the hands of a woman.

Why she’s amazing

Jael is amazing because she showed great courage, she didn’t wait to be told what to do, she acted on her own initiative according to the will of God. She disregarded what was expected of her as a woman and did what was neccessary. Jael showed strength by not pondering over whether Sisera would wake up and got the job that Barak was unable to do, done. If she had hid him for the sake of the ties he had to her husband, Sisera would have escaped and probably continued his reign of terror over the Israelites. Can you break free from what is expected to do what is neccessary? The bible described her as most blessed of women in Judges 5 (vs 24). Even if people underestimate the power of God within you, continue to be strong and use the little that you have to do great things. Turn your apparent weaknesses into strengths and be blessed!
