“God, kill my enemies…”

When I was younger, perhaps because of the type of church I grew up in or the type of culture I grew up in, praying for the death and destruction of my enemies was, well…normal. It wasn’t until I become autonomous in my journey as a Christian and began to understand the nature of God and His love, that those types of prayers began to make me feel uneasy. I could no longer say amen or even utter such prayers any more.

They want us to die so they should die first.

This is the argument I always hear and I can understand the logic behind it from a carnal perspective but not from a spiritual one. We indulge in bad eating habits, overwork, don’t exercise etc why don’t we cast and bind these things that are killing us slowly? Because we enjoy them (plot twist!!!). It’s easy to blame diabetes, things not going right, a broken home etc on ‘them’ and call on God as a body guard or hired assassin, rather than walking with Him as a friend and father on a daily basis to help us know what we should be battling and how.

Jesus loves your enemies!

Yes you read correctly, He loves them and died for them too. He desires that none should perish, so how dare we? He wants all to come to repentance, so how dare we think we can take that opportunity away from them? Christ teaches us to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us…or did we not read that far into scripture? I digress. We should not rejoice at their downfall but we should see it as God’s justness in action, God operates on the law of reaping what you sow, I’ll leave that there. 1 Thessalonians 1:6 tells us that God will pay back with trouble those who trouble us. However if we now become the troublers, then that pay back is also ours. Instead we should trust God to fight our battles in the best way only He knows how. The word tells me that SURELY He will save us from the fowlers snare and from the deadly pestilences. It also tells me not to fear because the Lord WILL fight for me. There are never any maybe’s, perhaps, it’s possible that, when it comes to God talking about coming to our rescue.

So what should I pray then?

For protection

For strength

For wisdom, knowledge and understanding

For full trust in God

For those who trouble you to come to a knowledge of God, to be touched by His love and for God to have His will  be done regarding them. This takes maturity.

  2. What an encouragement to people! Knowing about God’s character will help so many people redirect their prayers. Reading Scripture in context is so so key, thanks for sharing! =)
