We all know Mary the mother of Christ but when great women are counted, she is often overlooked. She was the perfect example of humility, faith and so much more.
Where you’ll find her
Mary can be found in many places but I’ll list just two references:
– Luke 1 & 2
– John 2:3-5
Who she was
Mary was a Mother, Wife and humble servant of God who found favour in His sight. There is not much on her background but we can infer that she was probably not the most affluent and was also young(ish).
What she did
First and foremost she gave birth to our Lord and saviour. She trusted God even though her situation flagged too many reasons not to. She knew who she was in God. ‘From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the mighty one has done great things for me.’ How many of us can boast in God like this? We are too caught up with trying to appear humble. How many of us can bless the name of the Lord like this in times that are crazy and scary?
Why she was amazing
Mary was amazing for the reasons stated above. She was also amazing because of her great humility. She was almost submissive to Jesus whom she gave birth to and watched grow. During the wedding in Cana (John 2: 1-11) she went to Jesus and told him the wine had run out. She could have evoked her ‘I’m your Mother’ power and Jesus would have obeyed, but she didn’t. Mary simply told the people to do what Jesus told them to do. How do we use the power/authority given to us over people? She was strong! When people were probably gossiping about her, giving her strange looks and doing all sorts because of her miraculous conception, I’m sure she stayed calm. When her husband to be began behaving differently towards her, I’m sure she continued to trust God and hold on to the message delivered to her by Gabriel. Mary watched her son die a horrific death and probably continued to trust God through it all. When what we have been given is taken away, how do we react? Do we trust God and rest in Him or do we become bitter and turn from Him? God deemed Mary trustworthy enough to raise His Son, this indicates the depth to which Mary feared the Lord. Can God trust you with assignments both big and small? Mary boasted in God. This for me is something I admire so much. She maintained her humility but knew the God that was working within her. Mary was joyful. Her circumstance is one I cannot personally imagine nor wish for. Yet she still glorified the Lord with her soul and spirit. If that is not amazing, I don’t know what it.
