God is not a magician/genie…

Its been a while and for all of that while, this post has been on my heart. Over the past few months I found myself repeating the phrase ‘God is not a magician/genie’ to old and young alike.

I and I’m sure many of you, have experienced times where we just want God to do supernatural tricks to manipulate things in our favour. We want an answer or sign now because if we don’t get it; God must not really love us, He must not be able to hear us, we are not as worthy of His freely given grace and mercy as others.

A magician is someone with something to prove, they dazzle and entertain. They learn tricks in order to lure you into a false sense of security for something in return, be it fame, money or something else. God does not need to prove Himself to us, therefore when we ask Him for something He will do it in His own time because He has an assurance in Himself that no magician can have. A magician’s following is dependent on their performance, God’s track record speaks for itself. He invites us into fellowship with no strings attached. God has our best interest in mind 24/7 (see Jeremiah 29:11) but a genie just does what it needs to do when summoned, regardless of its detriment to us. Another thing about God is that He works with processes. The journey you need to go on whilst you are waiting for that answer is as, if not more important than the answer. When we go through the wilderness we are being refined and made better, if that is skipped we could end up like the proverbial pig with the gold ring in its snout. I am not claiming that there are times where God doesn’t just move suddenly in our lives, I am a living testimony that this can be true as many times as the Lord permits. However, we should not behave/think as if this is the only way He moves because it is not. The journey to the destination is joyful too. God doesn’t want us to live in misery until a prayer is answered then revert back to misery until the next time. NO! Joy is what we are to have, joy in the good and joy in the bad. Joy in the abundance of answers and joy in His silence.

I invite you and myself to see God for who He is, a Father. What father wants their child to never learn anything, be spoilt and lack discipline? Next time God seems to be taking a little longer, thank Him because you are about to start a journey of transformation if and only if you hand over that journey to Him. Walk with Him, He knows exactly how you are feeling and how to comfort you whether or not you end up getting what you wanted.
