The bible lets us know that the tongue holds in it the power of life AND death (Proverbs 18:21). We so quickly and easily choose death too often. The word ‘and’ means there is an option, one can take precedence over the other. What do I choose? What is my default wielding of this power? Life or death? If something is dead, there is no hope, no way out, its useless, it ceases to have any form of power or intelligence, it’s gone. How many times have we spoken such words into our own lives, our situations, the lives and situations of those around us. If we truly thought about how powerful our tongues were we would be more careful. The word ‘tongue’ is not limited to our physical organ, the mind is included. Where there is life however, there is hope, there is growth and development, change can occur, things can be birthed, even when there seems to be no way, a way can be made because there is life and faith to do so.
This year, I am choosing life. Speaking death into situations is the easy way out, it means no work needs to be done, no changes need to be made, ‘it’s just the way I am’ ‘I will never get there so it doesn’t matter’ will become ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ ‘I call on the Lord in my distress and He answers me.’ Naturally, when something is dead there is no going back. However supernaturally (because the bible has shown us many examples) what was dead can have life once more. Are we willing?
The root of what leaves the mouth comes from the heart (Luke 6:45), what is our heart towards our self and those around us? This must be assessed and changed because where there is life there is an opportunity to change. To help myself make use of the power of life, I have decided to make three positive declarations every morning which I will repeat until I am smiling and energised and also repeat through out the day. Today’s declarations are: I am disciplined, I have a purpose and I am successful. You may find it helpful to write it down in order to remember. I know I’ve struggled a little bit to remember during the day, since I have started. As we begin to see ourselves better I believe God will aid us to see our fellow man better.
